Why a topcoat is important

Our paints are generally extremely robust. This means you can easily wipe away stains on the wall with a damp cloth. Plus, any small areas can be touched up easily at any time. You'll see that the colour blends in perfectly over the touched-up area and becomes invisible after a short time. As a rule of thumb: the glossier a paint is, the more hard-wearing and low-maintenance it is.

Why a topcoat is important

Even so, there are some areas where applying a topcoat makes a lot of sense. For instance, if you're painting a kitchen splashback that is often exposed to water splashes, we recommend a topcoat of MissPompadour To Seal. This topcoat is transparent and satin-matt.

If you want to paint a wooden or metal item that gets a lot of wear and tear — such as a chair, or a bookshelf that is constantly in use — you should definitely protect the surfaces with a clear varnish.

Matt clear varnish as a topcoat

If you want to make a painted surface even more durable, we recommend giving it extra protection with To Seal, especially on painted floor tiles, but also on kitchen worktops and similar surfaces. This also makes it more resistant to dirt and easy to clean.

Furniture, kitchen cabinets, or other items finished with matt paint or chalk paint can also be sealed with a clear wax. While this slightly reduces the matt effect, it gives the surface a beautifully polished, elegant sheen.
