Paint for wood: what you need to know

There's no denying that wood has a special charm with its natural surface, with all its growth rings and knotholes. However, not all wooden furniture is finished to such a high standard that it develops its full radiance with a transparent coating. The best way to customise your furniture is to choose a beautiful shade from MissPompadour's colour samples. How about wood colour in grey, blue or white? Or dare an attention-grabbing colour like red or pink wood paint! You can easily paint furniture with any of our wood colours.

What characterises wood paint?

To give you a durable, hard-wearing and beautiful finish, a wood colour must adhere very well to the surface and be of high quality. If it is then also easy to apply, painting is a great pleasure. We offer a wide range of wood varnishes and paints that do not require sanding. You can choose between two gloss levels for MissPompadour's wood varnishes: soft semi-gloss and matt. It is also possible to paint open wood with the completely matt wall paints.

Which wood can I paint or varnish?

You can actually paint all types of wood. For some projects, it is worth taking a closer look. Is there already a varnish on the wood? Do imperfections and annoying scratches need to be repaired? Has the wood previously been stained, oiled, waxed, varnished or varnished? Even if you're not sure, you can still achieve a great result with the right primer.

When is wood paint used?

Wood colour is always used when you want to make a change. Perhaps you want to paint a brightly coloured piece of furniture with orange or black wood paint or a solid cupboard with beige wood paint. Which MissPompadour colour is suitable for painting wood?

If your project is subject to heavy use, for example a wooden floor, kitchen furniture or a shoe cabinet that is used every day, it is worth choosing an extra sturdy paint. Our soft silky matt Easy Eggshell is particularly robust on wooden surfaces! Not sure whether your kitchen is made of real wood or laminate? You don't need to worry about that either, you can also paint plastic with the semi-matt lacquers.
The matt chalk varnishes from LittlePomp and CosyColours are suitable for less stressed wooden surfaces and are also easy to clean and wipe clean with an additional topcoat.
These are particularly impressive if you want to make a piece of furniture "disappear" in front of the wall. Simply paint the wall behind with the same wall colour and the oversized wall cabinet will discreetly recede into the background. Even hard-wearing walls are no obstacle for our colours.

The right wood colour for outdoor areas

With the right wood paints, you can also easily create harmony and individuality outdoors, whether it's a garden shed, garden furniture or children's playhouse - your projects will be painted in no time and ready for the outdoor season.

We recommend the Balcony & Garden Varnish for outdoor areas. It has been specially developed for outdoors, is weather-resistant and can withstand heavy use. The robust paint is UV-resistant, scratch and impact-resistant and adheres perfectly to a wide variety of surfaces. It also has an elegant, semi-gloss finish that ensures an even, high-quality result. And as always with MissPompadour: low odour, quick-drying and easy to use - so painting is really fun.

Alternatively, you can of course continue to work with the Easy Eggshell! It is also suitable for outdoor use and scores particularly well with its huge range of colours.

No matter which paint you choose: Make sure that the surface is well prepared. The wood should always be suitable for outdoor use and impregnated accordingly for surfaces exposed to the elements. It is also important to note that water-based paints, such as the Balcony & Garden Paint and Easy Eggshell! do not tolerate standing water. Therefore, make sure that water can always run off the painted surfaces.

Wood paint for interior wood that is not exposed to much stress

If you want to paint your wood paint indoors, you can do so without hesitation, as our paints are practically odourless and do not splatter.
Open, unvarnished and unsealed wooden surfaces that are subject to little wear can also be painted very well with the matt paint qualities and even the extremely high-quality wall paints. These include, for example, wooden ceilings in living rooms, purely decorative pieces of furniture and home accessories. The wall paint is particularly suitable as a base for the topcoat with decorative waxes such as metal effect, antique or white waxes. Incidentally, you can use a flat brush for painting, as brush strokes in particular create the perfect shabby chic look on matt furniture.

Painting wood: a few tips for application

Not all wood is the same and everyone has their own favourite technique. We have therefore explained here what else needs to be considered when painting wood.

The right primer for wood

As a natural material, wood can react a little unpredictably to a new coat of paint. If you apply the new paint to an open wood surface, ingredients may be activated that can cause discolouration in light shades. This leakage of stain, tannins and previous staining is called " bleeding". Fortunately, you can avoid the risk of bleeding by simply priming with a stain block. This is often a good idea on stairs and wooden ceilings, as these are usually made from bleeding wood. Especially on very porous surfaces, you can create a stable layer of varnish by applying a primer with a wood primer such as To Bond & Block.

Which is better: varnish or stain wood?

A wood stain is a coat of varnish with fewer colour pigments and fillers. This allows you to see the wood grain even after painting. Each of our colours and wood varnishes can be thinned and applied as a stain. Diluting the wood colour with water makes it less hard-wearing. In addition, it is not possible to prime under the glaze, as the primer already covers the grain. It takes a little practice to achieve an even colouring with a wood stain on large surfaces. The aim of painting is to ensure that the colour is applied opaquely and thus achieves full resilience.

Which varnish is best suited for wood?

Easy Eggshell is particularly suitable for wood at MissPompadour! This varnish adheres excellently to wood, is robust, easy to use and suitable for both indoors and outdoors. You can use it for furniture, doors and many other wood projects - without sanding.

Which is better, wood varnish or Wood stains?

That depends on your goal: Wood varnish is opaque, protects the wood reliably and adds colour. Wood stains look more natural, but provide less protection than varnish. If you want colour and a smooth surface, use varnish - if you want a wood look, use stain.

Can wood be painted without sanding?

Yes, this is often possible. If the wood is clean, grease-free and the old coat is stable, you can paint directly with our Easy Eggshell! For difficult substrates, bleeding wood, such as oak, or heavy discolouration, we recommend To Bond & Block beforehand so that everything adheres securely and nothing bleeds through.

How many coats of wood varnish do I need for an opaque result?

As a rule, 2 coats with our Easy Eggshell! are sufficient for an evenly covering result. A third coat may be advisable for very dark surfaces or where there is a strong colour change. It is important to apply the coats thinly rather than too thickly.

How long does wood varnish have to dry and when is it ready for use?

Easy Eggshell! can be painted over after 4-5 hours. The varnish is fully resilient after 14 days when it is completely hardened. Until then, you should treat the furniture with care.

Is wood varnish suitable for furniture, doors or the floor?

Yes, our Easy Eggshell is ideal for furniture and doors as it is hard-wearing and easy to clean. You can also use it to paint floors or stairs. You should always finish the coat with To Seal to make it even more durable. After 24 hours, the floor or stairs can be carefully walked on with socks. The varnish is fully cured after 14 days.
