Outdoor: Colour for the outdoors

When the days get longer and the sun is really warm again, you're drawn outside. You can finally sit in the garden again, enjoy the balcony and the fresh air. However, a glance outside often shows that the garden table has seen better days, the fence looks faded and the garden shed could do with an update. No problem - with the Landlust x MissPompadour Balcony & Garden Varnish, you can bring your outdoor projects back into shape in a relaxed manner.

What makes the balcony & garden varnish from MissPompadour so special?

The balcony & garden varnish is a water-based, silk-matt varnish for all garden furniture & co. with excellent coverage and particularly high durability. It was specially developed for outdoor use and reliably protects your projects for a long time. Use the exterior wood varnish on your garden furniture, fences, flower pots and balcony panelling. Our balcony & garden varnish is not just a wood varnish, it is also perfect for surfaces made of metal, plastic, ceramic or glass.

This makes our exterior paints perfect for gardens and balconies:

  • UV-resistant: Colours stay beautiful for a long time
  • High weather resistance
  • Protective against rust
  • Scratch & impact resistant
  • Extremely good adhesion to almost all substrates
  • Uniform satin matt finish
  • Low odour & fast drying
  • Water-based & particularly easy to apply

You can choose from 12 carefully coordinated colour shades from the Balcony & Garden Collection, which blends harmoniously into any outdoor ambience. This soft, semi-gloss varnish can withstand wind and weather, extreme cold and heat. Despite its stability, it is very easy to apply and has a low odour.

What surfaces can I paint outdoors?

The balcony & garden varnish is a real all-rounder for outdoors. After thorough cleaning, you can use it on almost all common surfaces:

  • Wood & weatherproof wooden materials (e.g. fences, façades, palisades, balustrades)
  • Coated & uncoated wood
  • Metal & galvanised sheet metal (e.g. rain gutters, downpipes - with rust protection)
  • Plastic (rigid PVC)
  • Tiles & stone-like substrates

Exterior surfaces that have already been painted or varnished can also be recoated without any problems - as long as they are stable. Thanks to its high resistance, you can even apply it to window frames or doors made of wood and plastic. Flower pots and concrete decorations also tolerate coats of this versatile varnish well and are grateful for a refresher.

Important: Like all water-based varnishes, the balcony & garden varnish does not tolerate standing water. You should therefore not paint horizontal, unprotected surfaces.

The right colour for your outdoor project

As diverse as our colour scheme is, so too are the surfaces to be painted. Read here what you should look out for in your project.

When using outdoor paints, it is always important to thoroughly clean the object to be painted - sanding is not normally necessary. Already painted, rust-free surfaces with stable old paint can then be painted over directly. Other surfaces require priming with our bond and stainblock To Bond & Block.

Some types of wood (softwoods, tropical woods, oak) can cause discolouration in light coats of paint due to bleeding of wood ingredients. Stained wood can also cause discolouration. Raw wood is also highly absorbent. In all these cases, To Bond & Block should therefore be used as a primer. If the primer discolours, apply a second coat of primer after approx. 8 hours. After waiting a further 8 hours, you can then apply the wood varnish.

If you are painting unpainted or rusty metal, a primer coat is also necessary. Sand off the rust well and apply a rust protection primer. Then use To Bond & Block so that the varnish can adhere well. As a primer, the primer has a drying time of approx. 3 hours, after which you can apply the varnish.

Even on smooth plastics, tiles or glass, always start with a coat of To Bond & Block and leave it to dry for approx. 3 hours. This will ensure that the outdoor paints hold well!

Outdoor varnish for garden furniture

Whether wood, metal or plastic - with our balcony & garden varnish, you can paint your garden furniture to make it durable and weatherproof. Thanks to the high opacity, 2 coats are usually enough to achieve an even, robust result for your outdoor area.

This is how you proceed:

  • 1. Clean the furniture thoroughly with MissPompadour To Clean.
  • 2. Remove any loose paint, sand the wood lightly if necessary.
  • 3. If you are painting metal that is already rusty: Sand off the rust thoroughly and apply rust protection primer.
  • 4. Prime raw or problematic wood, plastic, tiles, metal or other smooth surfaces with To Bond & Block.
  • 5. Apply 2 coats of the balcony & garden varnish. The first coat can be painted over after 6 - 8 hours.

After approx. 10 - 14 days, the varnish is completely dry and ready for use. You can find detailed instructions in our blog Painting wooden garden furniture.

The balcony & garden varnish for fences & garden sheds

Fences and garden sheds are particularly exposed to the weather. When the old wood varnish starts to peel off, it's time for a new coat of paint. This is exactly where the balcony & garden varnish comes into its own: high weather resistance, UV protection and an impact-resistant varnish film. The same applies here:

  • Clean and remove loose old paint.
  • Thoroughly sand down any rust on metal and pre-treat with rust protection.
  • Prime exposed wood and smooth surfaces with To Bond & Block.
  • apply 2 opaque coats of the balcony & garden varnish.

The result: a durable, silky matt look that will withstand the weather conditions for a long time.

Balcony & garden varnish for windows & doors (exterior)

The balcony & garden varnish is also ideal for window frames, exterior doors or balcony doors. It adheres excellently to wood, plastic (rigid PVC) and metal and is also easy to clean. Perfect protection for your doors and windows!

Our balcony & garden varnish is so low-odour that you can even paint window frames from the inside if you want a uniform appearance. The full colour depth develops reliably with the second coat. Find out more here.

Painting flower pots & plastic planters

Glazed flower pots, plastic planters or concrete decorations can be wonderfully adapted to your style with the balcony & garden varnish - this is also a great way to use up leftover paint. Prime the flower pots first with To Bond & Block, then paint 2 coats of varnish.

For unglazed terracotta pots, we still recommend using a wall paint instead of varnish, as moisture from the soil can strip the varnish. Wall paints are absorbed by the clay and do not seal the surface.

The Easy Eggshell! is also suitable for your garden

In addition to the balcony & garden varnish, you can also continue to use the MissPompadour Easy Eggshell! for your outdoor projects. It is water-based, low-odour and particularly versatile. Easy Eggshell! is ideal for projects where maximum colour variety is required. It is available in more than 100 colour shades from the Just paint Collection. Please note that it differs in its properties from our balcony & garden varnish. For example, the recommended application temperature is higher (at least 7 °C).

However, we recommend the specially developed Balcony & Garden varnish for outdoor surfaces subject to heavy use.

Tips for outdoor use

  • Application temperature: 5 - 25 °C (substrate & surroundings)
  • Relative humidity: max. 60 %
  • Avoid direct sunlight, extreme heat & cold
  • 2 coats ensure maximum durability

The varnish is ready to use and can be diluted with up to 5 % water if necessary. Always stir thoroughly before painting. Simply clean tools with soap and water.

Which varnish is weatherproof?

Weatherproof varnishes have been specially developed for outdoor use and can withstand moisture, UV radiation and temperature fluctuations. The water-based Balcony & Garden varnish from MissPompadour, for example, is UV-resistant and protects against rust. As a scratch and impact-resistant varnish, it can withstand weather conditions as long as no standing water collects on its surfaces

How long does varnish last outdoors?

This depends on how much the painted object is exposed to the weather and how often it is used. A painted, decorative shelf on a covered balcony will remain beautiful for longer than a garden table that is completely outdoors. But you can also intervene here: For example, store tables and chairs tilted so that water can always run off easily and store garden furniture in the cellar in winter. This way, you can enjoy your paint job for a long time. And remember: If something does chip off, you can repaint the area at any time!

What type of varnish is suitable for garden furniture?

For garden furniture, we recommend our balcony & garden varnish

Which is better, Wood stains or wood varnish?

Wood stains and varnish are two different products with different properties - which is better depends on the result you want to achieve! Stain is absorbed into the pores of the wood and is not opaque, varnish forms a solid, opaque layer over the wood. If you want to preserve the wood structure, stain is the product for you. If your goal is a smooth surface, use varnish

Can you paint without sanding?

With MissPompadour varnishesn - yes! Sanding is only necessary in exceptional cases: Peeling old paint should be sanded off so that the new varnish can adhere well. Rust must be thoroughly removed and the areas pre-treated with rust protection primer. If you are preparing very rough wood (e.g. a garden fence) for the first coat, sanding is also an advantage.
