Drying time

The varnish is dust-dry after approx. 1 hour and can be painted over after approx. 4 hours. It is fully cured after 2 weeks

Note: Some types of wood (softwoods, tropical woods, oak) can cause discolouration in light varnish coats due to bleeding of wood constituents. In this case, apply a thoroughly covering coat of MissPompadour To Bond & Block. Can be recoated after approx. 8 hours. If the substrate is highly absorbent or the first coat of primer is discoloured, a second coat must be applied. Wait another 8 hours.

Instructions

  1. Masking (optional) & cleaning: Remove dust, dirt and residue from the substrate. Mask off everything that is not to be painted. Please note that the preparation always differs depending on the project.
  2. Priming (if necessary): First apply a rich, thoroughly covering coat of MissPompadour To Bond & Block and note the drying time for your substrate.
  3. Carefully open the can: Carefully remove the clips on the lid with our paint can opener or use a palette knife or screwdriver. Bend the clips away from the bottom upwards. If you bend the clips away from the top of the can, they will pop less. Please note that the clips are under tension and hold your hand over them when removing them.
  4. Stir: Stir the varnish carefully.
  5. Pour the varnish into the paint tray: Pour a little into the paint tray. Do not work directly from the can to keep the can contents clean.
  6. Wet the roller or brush: Then wet the roller all around and lightly roll it out in the tray. Make sure that the roller is completely and sufficiently wetted with the varnish. It should no longer have any dry patches. Immerse the brush up to approx. half of the bristles.
  7. apply varnish & allow to dry thoroughly: Apply the varnish generously, quickly and evenly. For joints, edges, mouldings and narrow areas, use our small pink brush and work in immediately with the roller. Depending on the colour shade and substrate, several coats may be necessary. Observe the recommended drying time.

FAQ

How do I use Matt Varnish correctly?

Stir the varnish thoroughly after opening so that all the pigments are evenly distributed. Then pour some into a paint tray and apply the varnish evenly with a brush or varnish roller - not too thick. For large areas such as wooden ceilings, you can use a paint sprayer. Dilute the varnish with max. 10% water.

Leave the first coat to dry for approx. 4 hours or overnight. Then apply the second coat - even if the varnish already covers well. This makes the surface more robust and durable. The varnish is fully cured after around 14 days.

Tip: Wrap the brush, roller and paint tray in cling film during the drying time so that everything remains ready for use until the second coat.

When do I need to prime or seal Matt Varnish?

Often no primer or topcoat is necessary - especially if you are painting on sound old coats or untreated, clean wood. However, if your surface is bleeding, stained or very smooth, use MissPompadour To Bond & Block as a primer. This primer is also important for metal or coated plastic surfaces such as IKEA furniture.

Rough or rusty metal should be treated with rust protection primer before priming. For added durability, you can finish the painted surface with MissPompadour To Wax-Polish or To Seal - but note that topcoat makes the matt surface appear slightly shinier.

Do I have to sand Matt Varnish?

Sanding is only advisable if the old paint is peeling or the surface is particularly smooth. As a rule, good cleaning and priming is sufficient. If you lightly mat the surface between coats, this can improve adhesion - but it is not absolutely necessary.

Can I also spray Matt Varnish?

Yes, you can use a paint sprayer for large, smooth surfaces. Dilute the varnish with a maximum of 10% water and work quickly. Important: Here too, we recommend 2 coats with drying time in between so that the finish remains durable.

Which projects is Matt Varnish suitable for?

Matt Varnish is ideal for interior furniture that you want to give a sophisticated, matt finish - e.g. chests of drawers, cabinets, radiators or even surfaces with a vintage look. The varnish also looks particularly beautiful with tone-on-tone furniture and wall designs. It is suitable for wood, metal, painted and unpainted surfaces.
