Your area of application
- Coated furniture surfaces
- varnished or already painted woods
- Clear lacquered wood
- varnished furniture and decoration made of wood or metal
Drying time
The CosyColours chalk varnish can be painted over after 2 hours. Depending on the colour shade and substrate, several coats may be necessary.
Note: A primer coat with To Bond & Block or the Cosy Colours Primer improves adhesion on smooth, grease-free substrates even without sanding. This can be painted over after approx. 4 hours.
- Sanded or untreated natural wood
- Raw construction timber
- Tropical wood
- Softwoods, hardwoods
Drying time
The CosyColours chalk varnish can be painted over after approx. 2 hours. Depending on the colour shade and substrate, several coats may be necessary.
Note: Some types of wood (softwoods, tropical woods, oak) can cause discolouration in light varnish coats due to bleeding of wood constituents. In this case, apply a thoroughly covering coat of MissPompadour To Bond & Block. Can be painted over after approx. 8 hours. If the first primer coat has discoloured, we recommend applying another coat and waiting another 8 hours.
- High-gloss surfaces
- Glass
- Coated metal
- Tiles and other stone-like surfaces
- Plastic (especially rigid PVC)

We recommend for preparation
Instructions
- Masking (optional) & cleaning: Remove dust, dirt and residue from the substrate. Mask off everything that is not to be painted. Preparation may vary depending on the project.
- Prime (if necessary): Apply a rich, thoroughly opaque coat of MissPompadour To Bond & Block or CosyColours Primer - if your substrate requires a primer. Observe the appropriate drying time.
- Open the tin carefully: Remove the clips on the lid with a paint can opener, screwdriver or spatula. Hold your hand over it when opening - the clips are under tension.
- Stir: Stir the varnish thoroughly.
- Pour into paint tray: Pour a small amount of chalk varnish into the paint tray. Do not work directly from the can so that the contents remain clean.
- Wet the roller or brush: Dip the roller into the varnish all around and lightly roll it out until no dry patches are visible. Dip the brush up to about half of the bristles.
- apply the varnish & allow to dry thoroughly: Apply the chalk varnish generously and evenly. For joints, edges and small details, use our small pink brush and work directly with the roller. Depending on the surface and colour shade, several coats may be necessary. Observe the recommended drying time.

FAQ
What is the difference between chalk varnish and conventional varnish?
CosyColours chalk varnish is water-based, VOC-free and low-odour - perfect for interiors. The chalk contained in CosyColours chalk varnish provides a matt, powdery look and thus a velvety finish with nostalgic charm. Unlike many conventional varnishes, it is environmentally friendly and particularly easy to apply.
Can I simply paint over furniture that has already been painted?
Yes, as long as the old varnish is stable (does not flake off), you can paint over it directly with CosyColours chalk varnish. Thorough cleaning beforehand is sufficient - a primer is helpful for very smooth old coatings.
Do I have to sand before painting with CosyColours chalk varnish?
In most cases, sanding is not necessary - a great advantage of CosyColours chalk paint! However, it is important to clean the surface thoroughly. If the surface is smooth or very shiny (e.g. varnish, plastic or tiles), priming with MissPompadour To Bond & Block or the CosyColours Primer is usually sufficient to ensure good adhesion.
Only on waxed or oily surfaces - for example old furniture with furniture wax - do you need to sand down the layer beforehand, otherwise chalk varnish will not adhere well. Loose old paint or flaking varnish should also be sanded or removed beforehand.
For a shabby chic look, you can sand the edges with fine sandpaper after painting - but this is a design step, not a must.
How do I apply CosyColours chalk varnish correctly?
Before painting, you should clean your furniture thoroughly - ideally with MissPompadour To Clean. Then allow to dry thoroughly. Mix the chalk varnish carefully and apply it in two thin coats using a roller or brush. The colour should dry for approx. 4 hours between coats.
How do I seal the coating and when is this necessary?
For surfaces subject to heavy wear - such as table tops or chairs - we recommend applying a coat of MissPompadour To Seal or CosyColours Topcoat after painting. Alternatively, you can achieve a natural shabby chic finish with CosyColours Furniture Wax. Both protect and enhance your look.
How do I create a shabby chic look?
Once the paint has dried, you can carefully sand the edges and details with fine sandpaper or a sanding pad. Then apply CosyColours Furniture Wax for an authentic finish.
When do I need to prime the substrate?
Priming is recommended for smooth surfaces such as glass, tiles, plastic or metal. You should also prime bleeding wood or old stains with To Bond & Block or CosyColours Primer to prevent discolouration. For rusty metal, use a rust protection primer first.
Can I also use CosyColours chalk varnish outdoors?
The CosyColours chalk varnish was developed for indoor use and is not suitable for outdoor use.
If you want to paint furniture or surfaces outdoors, we recommend our robust Eggshell Varnish. This varnish is much more resistant and weatherproof - ideal for doors, garden furniture, shutters or outdoor planters.
How do I store an opened can of chalk varnish?
Seal the tin airtight and store it in a cool, frost-free place. The varnish will then keep for several months. Stir well before the next use!
