Painting plasterboard: What you need to know

Plasterboard is an indispensable building material in modern drywall construction. This is because they are lightweight yet fireproof and also offer good sound insulation. As a natural building material, plaster also contributes to well-being in the home from a building biology perspective. It can absorb water and release it back into the room air. Plasterboard is used for walls and ceilings and is particularly suitable for remodelling and renovating

Incidentally, the term Rigips is the name of a company, but Rigips has also become a generic term for plasterboard, just as paper handkerchiefs are generally referred to as Tempotücher in Germany

However, if you want to paint or wallpaper such walls, there are a few things to bear in mind, as a plasterboard wall has different properties to a plastered stone wall. You can find the right wall paints for this in the MissPompadour online shop!

Preparing plasterboard for painting

The joints between the individual boards are usually sealed with filler. As the filler is applied in several stages and sanded down again and again, there is usually a lot of dust on newly installed plasterboard

It is therefore important to clean the plasterboard walls thoroughly before painting. There must be no sanding dust or dirt on them and they must be completely dry

Preparing a coat of paint on plasterboard also involves priming the plasterboard walls with a deep penetrating primer. MissPompadour To Prime Walls is best suited for this. Priming also creates a substrate with even absorption behaviour. The primer also prevents the open-pored plasterboard substrate from absorbing too much paint

The same paint that you can use on plaster or roller plaster is suitable for drywall. All wall paints from MissPompadour are suitable. In this respect, the application of paint to drywall is no different to painting a plastered wall

The chalk paints from MissPompadour

CosyColours chalk paints for nostalgic flair

If you want to paint your plasterboard wall in particularly cosy colour shades, use the chalk paints from the CosyColours collection. With over 30 subtle, warm colour shades, you can create a chalky matt finish. These colours have exceptionally high opacity. And because they are VOC-free, which means that they do not release any harmful substances into the environment during processing and drying, they also go perfectly with breathing plasterboard walls. CosyColours chalk paints, like all MissPompadour Paints, are easy to apply, wipe clean and hard-wearing

LittlePomp chalk paints: Soft tones especially for children

The chalk paints in the LittlePomp children's collection are particularly suitable for painting children's rooms. With their 15 soft colour shades selected by child psychologists and their harmlessness to health, you can design the children's and baby's room. With the right walls, you can create a perfect room climate

Painting plasterboard: how it works

After thorough cleaning, prime the walls with To Clean - Cleaner. Depending on how absorbent the wall is, you can also dilute To Prime Walls - follow the instructions for the product. Stir everything well, empty some of the primer into a paint tray and paint it thinly with a roller. After approx. 4 hours, it will be dry and you can start applying the paint to the drywall

Painting plasterboard works in the same way as you would paint a plastered wall. Mask off what you don't want to paint. Stir the paint well and pour some into a paint tray. Paint corners, edges and difficult areas with a brush and use a paint roller for large areas. Then remove the tape while the paint is still wet. Normally 2 coats of paint are sufficient. Of course, this also applies to a plasterboard ceiling. You can find detailed instructions on how to paint walls in our blog on the subject

Order paint for plasterboard at MissPompadour Paint

It's best to order matching colour cards so that you can view the colour shades in real life and in your lighting conditions. The colour cards from the Just paint collection from MissPompadour come in postcard format and can be removed individually. This means you can pin them to the wall in any lighting and examine them at your leisure

Of course, there are also colour cards for the CosyColours and LittlePomp Collections

Can you paint directly onto plasterboard?

We recommend priming plasterboard with MissPompadour To Primer Walls. On the one hand, this creates a visually more uniform surface. And secondly, the primer prevents the open pores of the plasterboard from absorbing too much paint

Can you simply paint over plasterboard?

Once the boards have been primed with a deep penetrating primer, they can simply be painted over like normal plaster.

Why deep primer on plasterboard?

The deep primer creates an even surface and prevents the wall paint from soaking up too much. This ultimately saves paint

What colour should I paint plasterboard?

All wall paints from MissPompadour can be used: The Valuable Wall Paint, The Functional Wall Paint and all chalk-based wall paints from the CosyColours and LittlePomp children's collection.
