Paint IKEA furniture

How it works

Tips & tricks for painting IKEA furniture

  • Always remove the adhesive tape while the varnish is still wet.
  • If you are painting your furniture in two colours and taping over surfaces that have already been painted, the varnish should have cured for at least 14 days beforehand.
  • Scratches and imperfections in your furniture can be repaired beforehand with our filler.
  • IKEA furniture often has smooth, coated surfaces. That's why our To Bond & Block primer is a real must-have for perfect adhesion. For furniture such as Pax, Hemnes, Kallax, Ivar, Malm and Billy, as well as furniture with a comparable surface, you can achieve a particularly beautiful, even and, above all, long-lasting result.
  • If your furniture is new, particularly thorough cleaning is important. New IKEA furniture is often treated with protective substances that can impair the adhesion of the colour - so cleaning is key.
  • After 14 days, the varnish is completely hardened and fully resilient.

Painting furniture from IKEA: How-to

This makes painting IKEA furniture very easy:

  • Clean the furniture thoroughly and wipe with clean water.
  • Mask off or dismantle anything that is not to be painted.
  • Always prime with To Bond & Block - especially on coated IKEA surfaces.
  • Allow the primer to dry well, preferably overnight.
  • Stir the varnish well and pour it into a paint tray.
  • Paint the colour quickly and evenly. Prepare corners and edges with a brush. Paint surfaces with a roller.
  • After 4 - 6 hours drying time, apply the 2nd coat.
  • After a few hours, the varnish is dry but still sensitive. Easy Eggshell! is fully cured and resilient after around 14 days.
  • Pro tip: If you want to assemble your furniture shortly after painting, be particularly careful not to damage the still hardening varnish layer. To be on the safe side, wait until it has fully cured.
