Before painting
First and foremost is the right choice of colours. The colours used should really complement, each other perfectly and also match the wall colour. Maybe you have a piece of furniture that is ideal for accentuating its shape with two different colours. Applying the same colour with different shade levels can also look very sophisticated. The colours in our CosyColours chalk paint collection are particularly suitable for this. All the colour shades in this collection harmonise with each other; for example, maybe you paint the inner surface of the shelves in Dawn Blue and the outside in Stormy Sky Blue?
Do you like bold and vibrant colours? Then combine complementary colours such as Green with Pistachio and Red with Cherry on a small piece of furniture. If you prefer a softer, maritime look, go for colours like Blue with Fog and White with Vanilla, perhaps to repaint chairs. You can also get lots of ideas for beautiful colour combinations from the MissPompadour colour schemes. Or you can use the CosyColours chalk paints, which can be perfectly combined with each other. In any case, we recommend that you order the right colour cards before placing your order so that you can check out your desired colour combination in advance.

Step-by-step instructions: Painting furniture in two colours
1. Preparation:
As always, one of the first steps when painting in two colours is to thoroughly clean your workpiece. First remove all dirt and dust. Our mild but highly effective MissPompadour To Clean works great here. Any existing wax coats should be sanded off, as should any flaking paint. However, if an old paint coat is still stable and intact, you can simply paint over it.
Do you want to paint over an old paint coat that is still completely intact? Then you can skip the next step and go straight to step 3. :)
2. Primer:
Pine wood that is heavily stained or any wood prone to bleeding as well as highly absorbent woods should be primed first. A primer is also ideal if you want to paint plastic, glass, veneer, metal or other smooth surfaces. This will ensure optimal adhesion and a good painting result. Use the tried-and-tested MissPompadour To Bond & Block Primer for this. This will create a. stable white base coat. Attention: If you are painting metal furniture that has rusted, first remove the rust and apply rust protection primer before priming.
If you are using To Bond & Block as a stainblock on wood, allow the primer to dry for approx. 8 hours, or 3 hours when used to bond on smooth surfaces. If any stains appear on the surface after drying, we recommend a second coat.
3. Masking:
Once the primer has dried, carefully mask off the individual colour sections with MissPompadour Adhesive Tape.
4. Paint the first colour:
Now you can start applying the first colour. Apply 2 coats of paint and carefully peel off the tape as soon as you have finished. Pulling the tape off when the paint is still wet will prevent the paint from lifting off the surface. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly.
5. Paint the second colour:
If you have to mask off freshly painted surfaces for the second colour, make sure that the first colour coat has thoroughly dried - the longer, the better, but definitely wait several days. You can lessen the adhesive strength by pressing the tape against your clothing. Then, just press the edge of the adhesive tape firmly onto your piece of furniture just before painting. This will also help prevent the paint from lifting off the surface. Paint 2 coats of your second colour as well. Don't leave the tape on longer than necessary. With a steady hand and a little patience, you can also do without masking off with one of our pink brushes.
6. To Seal
Is your furniture heavily used? Then apply a coat of MissPompadour To Seal 24 hours after the last paint coat and leave to cure for approx.14 days. This will give you an extra scratch and impact-resistant surface.
Pro tip: To get a straight line or reach any corners, you can use one of the fine MissPompadour brushes. With its bevelled, fine bristles, you can reach tight spots. A paint roller is recommended for larger areas.
Which paint quality is suitable for painting furniture in two colours?
At MissPompadour, you will find a collection in which almost every one of the more than 30 colour shades can be combined with another. These are the soft shades of CosyColours chalk paint. The colour selection is really fun here, because you can't go wrong. The soft colour shades of this eco-friendly paint create a matt, slightly rustic finish on your furniture, creating a soft, cosy atmosphere in your home. You can be sure of a perfect result. Painting with CosyColours chalk paints goes particularly well with a vintage interior style, however the matt finish and pleasant shades actually suit any room.
You can also find delicate shades that can be combined with a colour from our child-friendly LittlePomp collection. For example, paint a piece of furniture with the soft Beige & Warm and then add accents with Grey & Mindful. LittlePomp chalk paints are available as furniture paint and as wall paint.
But you'll also find great colour combinations among the more than 90 colours in our Just paint collection. These paints are available in the Eggshell Varnish quality, which you can use to create a satin matt, extremely hard-wearing surface. Eggshell paint is also weatherproof and therefore suitable for outdoor use.
The other furniture paint quality in the MissPompadour Simply Paint Collection is Matt paint. As the name suggests, you can achieve an elegant, matt finish with this paint quality. Both paint qualities are also available as wall paint.
However, these paint qualities are not only available in the same colour as wall paints, but are also coordinated with the MissPompadour wallpaper collection. So you can not only paint in 2 colour shades, but perhaps also decorate the inside of a cupboard or display cabinet with a matching wallpaper.
All these paints cover beautifully and are wonderful and easy to apply. You won't be annoyed by dripping or splashes of paint. After all, painting should be fun!
Tips and tricks for sharp, clean colour edges
When two colour shades meet, it is important to create a clear colour edge. The first step is to mask off one area with MissPompadour painter's tape before you start on the other colour shade. By the way, there is a good trick: you will find it easier if you remove the tape when the paint is still wet. Two more tips:
1. As you should always apply the varnish in 2 coats of paint, masking tape must also be applied in 2 steps. This means that you remove the tape after the first coat if your colours are still wet. Once the varnish has dried, you should mask off again to prepare for the second coat. This may seem a little awkward, but it's worth it. This will give you clear edges and a professional look.
2. For a clear colour edge on narrow strips, use the ingenious MissPompadour line scraper. With this brush and a little practice, you will soon be able to achieve perfect edges or an exact line.
