Painting over old tile paint for blue tiles – does it work?

Is blue your favourite colour? Then why not choose a blue paint to give your bathroom or kitchen a fresh new look. Painting tiles works a treat, as long as you keep a few things in mind.

First, the surfaces need to be spotlessly clean. In the bathroom, you'll need to remove all soap and limescale residue, as well as dust and grease, so the primer and paint can adhere properly. The best choice is the gentle but effective cleaner MissPompadour To Clean. Steer clear of aggressive cleaners containing chlorine or strongly alkaline cleaning products. Residue can settle in the rough grout lines and later damage your tile paint finish.

Next, take a look at your silicone joints. Paint can't adhere well to silicone. Luckily, there's MissPompadour To Seal Silicone. Brush it over your silicone joints with a thin brush. After that, you can paint over them with the primer, then the tile paint, without any trouble.

Before you reach for the blue tile paint, the surfaces need to be primed. To help the blue tile paint adhere to very smooth surfaces, apply a base coat of To Bond & Block. This primer also boosts the high coverage of your tile paint. That's especially important if your surface has a strong pattern and you'd like to work with light blue shades.

The paint to turn your tiles blue

Our Easy Eggshell! is a perfect tile paint. It creates an elegant, satin-matt finish that's easy to care for and extraordinarily sturdy, too. This tile paint is highly water-resistant. Running water won't harm Easy Eggshell!; just avoid standing water. That means you can also use it on the wall tiles in your shower. We recommend reinforcing these surfaces with To Seal as well. Water resistance is also a must for a kitchen splashback. With blue paint on your tiles, you can give your kitchen a fresh, contemporary look.

Easy Eggshell! sticks to almost all tiles, though there are a few exceptions: waxed or otherwise impregnated tiles usually can't be painted, and neither can tiles with a lotus effect.

Apply the tile paint in two coats on the primed surface. Use a brush for the grout lines, then paint the rest of the tiles with a roller. Thanks to the high coverage of the tile paint, supported by the primer, you can easily paint out even bold patterns with your blue tile paint. If you'd like your surface to be even more hard-wearing and tougher, finish with a coat of MissPompadour To Seal.

From sea to sky: blue tile paint for your rooms

Blue is an absolute favourite shade for many people. Nature sets the example, after all. Who doesn't love getting lost in the wide blue of the sky or marvelling at the blue sea? Flowers like forget-me-nots and violets are favourites for many. Back in the Romantic era, poets like Novalis were already searching for the blue flower. So why not bring this beautiful colour into your home in the form of paint for your tiles?

Blue tile paint for your bathroom

Make your bathroom your next painting project! A soft blue as your tile paint creates a real spa-like atmosphere. Water-inspired shades work especially well in the bathroom. Combine light, fresh aqua blues like Green with Aqua with natural wood accessories. Blue tile paint also looks very sophisticated in a really dark shade. A deep hue like Blue with Midnight is calming and relaxing. Let the wide choice of blue paints at MissPompadour inspire you. If you'd like to paint the ceiling at the same time, you'll find all the shades as blue wall paints too.

Blue floor tiles in the hallway & utility room

Can you give floor tiles a makeover with blue tile paint, too? And will the colours last? After all, paint on the floor has to withstand more wear than paint on the wall. Yes, our Easy Eggshell! is a product you can also use to paint the floor in your hallway or utility room. We do recommend finishing off floor tiles with To Seal to make the paint finish more stable.

By the way, with the help of MissPompadour stencils, you can also print a great pattern onto floor tiles. Blue tile paint can be combined with different colours here. Perhaps you'll use Blue with Jeans as your tile paint and add accents with the almost white Blue with Snow.

A wide choice of blue tile paint at MissPompadour

At MissPompadour, you'll find plenty of attractive shades of blue paints. First, there are the very light blue paints like the elegant Blue with Cloud with its slight grey tones. Beautiful shades between grey and blue include Blue with Fog and Blue with Grey. With a touch of green pigment, Dark Blue with Green is a real stunner, already leaning towards petrol. A vivid blue with a warm hint of violet is Blue with Violet. Vivid and dark is Blue with Night. The darkest blues are Blue with Ink and, almost black, the mysterious Blue with Black.

It's best to start by ordering a colour card set. That way, you can take your time deciding which paint shades you like for your project. The colour cards are postcard-sized and can be taken out individually. Look at each shade in every kind of light, then compare.

When you order your paint, add primer, brushes and rollers to your basket too. That saves you a trip to the DIY store and extra delivery costs. Our project sets are customisable shopping helpers, so you're guaranteed not to forget a thing!

Can blue tiles be painted over?

Yes, you can easily paint over blue tiles with our varnishes, which is a simple and cost-effective alternative to removing them. We recommend our Easy Eggshell for this!

Can tiles be painted blue?

Yes, both floor tiles and wall tiles can be painted with blue varnish. The final application of To Seal is very important for floor tiles. This makes the varnish coat harder.

How long does blue tile paint last?

This depends on how the tiles are used. You can also touch up the blue tile colour at any time.

What effect do blue tiles have in the bathroom?

Blue colour shades, which are also used for bathroom tiles, radiate harmony, peace and contentment and have a calming and relaxing effect. They symbolise the vastness of the sea or the summer sky and help to reduce hectic and stress. Maritime and fresh shades of blue in particular, such as Blue with Cloud or turquoise aqua tones, are ideal for creating a wellness atmosphere and a boost of freshness in the bathroom.

Which is better in the bathroom, light or dark blue floor tiles?

Varnish in darker colours is perhaps a little less sensitive. It is important that the tiles harmonise with the varnish on the wall. Perhaps combine varnish in different shades of blue by printing the tiles with a creative stencil.

What colour goes with blue tiles?

The ideal combination colour depends heavily on the specific shade of the blue tiles, as the pigments of the colours should harmonise. In general, warm sand and earthy tones go very well with blue. They emphasise the relaxing effect of the blue tone. Shades of white and soft greys are also suitable as combination colours. Dark blue creates a strong, maritime contrast to clear white. For vibrant accents, you can also add complementary colours such as orange or strong pinks. Pay attention to bluish undertones with red tones.

Are blue tiles modern?

The colour blue is hugely popular worldwide and fits beautifully into all kinds of interior styles. Petrol and turquoise shades belong to the blue-green spectrum as aqua colours, and they're considered timeless classics with a modern, elegant look. Take Blue with Violet, for example. It was already a MissPompadour trend colour!
