Painting tiles brown: easy and easy to care for

The advantage of brown shades is that they're not as delicate. That's why browns also work well for tiles on the floor, for example in the entrance area. A family bathroom can also be given a robust yet elegant look with brown tile paint. And a kitchen splashback painted with brown tile paint can get a whole new look.

In any case, it's a better decision to freshen up your wall or floor tiles with tile paint than to knock them off and fit new ones. Replacing them means tradespeople, plenty of mess and high costs. Painting tiles, by contrast, is affordable and low-mess.

Painting tiles brown with tile paint: does it really work?

You're probably wondering whether the paint can really hold on such a smooth surface. The answer is a clear yes! Follow a few tips and painting tiles works very well, giving you a perfect result.

First, it's very important to clean the tile surfaces thoroughly. There must be no dust, limescale or even grease residue on the surface. It's best to use the mild but effective cleaner MissPompadour To Clean. Avoid aggressive, strongly alkaline or chlorine-based cleaning products at all costs. They could settle in the grout and later ruin your paint finish.

Next, treat any silicone joints, as often found in bathrooms. Paint simply won't stick to silicone. At MissPompadour you'll find the primer To Seal Silicone. Apply it thinly to the silicone with a brush, then you can paint over it with the primer for the paint or tile paint.

Now prime the tiled surface with MissPompadour To Bond & Block. This gives the tile paint good adhesion, even on very smooth surfaces. To Bond & Block also creates an evenly coloured base for your coat of brown tile paint. With the primer, you can also simply paint out strong patterns, as it boosts the already very high coverage of the paints.

Paint your tiles with this brown tile paint

Easy Eggshell! is perfect as a tile paint. You get a soft satin-matt, refined finish that tolerates water and is easy to clean, even with gentle cleaning products. The tile paint can be used in any room with tiles: in the bathroom, kitchen, utility room and hallway, you can freshen up your tiles with brown tile paint anywhere. Outdoor wall tiles can be painted with it too. Easy Eggshell! comes in over 120 shades and, of course, in many brown paint shades, from light to dark.

Apply the paint to the tiles on the wall or floor in two coats using a roller. Use a brush only for the grout. What a relief that MissPompadour tile paint is emission-minimised according to VdL-RL 01! For floor tiles, finish by stabilising them with MissPompadour To Seal. This makes your paint finish harder and also increases its water resistance.

Easy Eggshell! holds on almost all tiles, but there are a few exceptions: waxed or otherwise impregnated tiles usually can't be painted, and neither can tiles with a lotus effect.

Brown tile paint for many rooms

In any room in the house with tiles, you can create a whole new ambience with brown tile paint. Giving your tiles a completely different look with paint in new colours can transform a room enormously. Paint in brown can make a big difference.

Tile paint: painting your floor brown

Can a floor painted with tile paint withstand the wear and tear it's exposed to, especially in the entrance area? Doesn't a floor covering need to be harder? Of course, floor tiles face different demands, but our Easy Eggshell! is the right choice here too. Finish by stabilising your floor with To Seal to make it even harder and tougher. Stabilising also means the paint can be cleaned easily with water and cleaning products.

In the hallway or entrance area, you could perhaps create your floor design in several colours. Take a look at the wide selection of MissPompadour stencils. With brown tile paint, you can print a pattern in different colours onto your tiles. Perhaps you'll use a light brown such as Brown with Choc and stencil your pattern with Brown with Dark Chocolate and Brown with Nougat – a real confectionery combination for your tiled floor.

Give your bathroom wall tiles a makeover with tile paint

In the bathroom too, you can paint the tiled walls with brown paint and perhaps combine it with another, darker brown tile paint on the floor. You can also coordinate the ceiling – all our brown shades are available not only as paint but also as wall paints in brown. Natural wood accessories and green leafy plants make for a lovely result.

By the way, the grout between the tiles is simply painted along with the brown tile paint. This gives a wonderfully calm surface. If you want to keep the grout visible and have patience and a steady hand, you can repaint it with paint in a contrasting colour.

Painting tiles: brown in the kitchen

Kitchens often have a splashback whose colours no longer go with new, modern kitchen furniture. Simply paint it with brown tile paint, or choose a shade that combines brown and grey, like MissPompadour Grey with Brown. If you have a light kitchen and want a splashback that's deep and dark but still warm, take a look at Brown with Black.

Remember that grease vapour easily forms in the kitchen and settles throughout the room. Before applying the paints, a thorough clean with To Clean is especially important.

Brown tile paint for utility rooms

You can brighten up your utility room with brown tile paint too. New colours on the tiles simply make working more enjoyable. A friendly brown shade like Brown with Terracotta makes the room look brighter. Thanks to the high coverage of the paint, you can also simply paint over ugly patterns on your tiles with brown tile paint.

Buy brown tile paint from MissPompadour

MissPompadour offers a lovely selection of different shades of brown: the very light, friendly Brown with Choc, reminiscent of hot chocolate, is a shade that works wonderfully for wall tiles. The tile paint Brown with Nougat has a medium colour intensity. If this shade is applied to the wall, it can also be cleverly complemented with an anthracite like Black with Slate on the floor. Grey with Peat has brown tones and is therefore well suited as a combination shade.

It's best to order a colour card set so you can compare all the brown shades at your leisure in any light. The colour cards can be removed individually. Once you've made your choice, order the tools you need, such as brushes and rollers, along with your paint. That way you only pay postage once. Our project sets are customisable shopping helpers so you never forget a product! And if you have any more questions, feel free to contact our knowledgeable customer service team.

When do I need to prime my tiles?

As tiles have a smooth surface, you should always prime them before applying tile varnish in brown. This will allow the varnish to adhere well to the smooth surface.

What do I need to bear in mind when cleaning my tiles painted with brown varnish?

You should use a mild cleaning agent and avoid extreme mechanical stress such as scrubbing. Only start cleaning when the paint is completely dry. This is the case after around 14 days.

How can I mask off two-colour tiles on freshly painted surfaces?

If you want to work with 2 varnish colours, you should either work with stencils or wait until the first varnish application is properly dry before you attach adhesive tape to the fresh varnish.

Can you paint over brown tiles?

Yes, brown tiles can be painted over. Use our Easy Eggshell for this! It is hard-wearing, easy to clean and water-resistant.

Which wall paint goes well with brown tiles?

As brown tones radiate warmth, they go well with cooler colours. Combine a fresh shade of petrol or turquoise with brown to create a friendly atmosphere. Warm beige tones such as Beige with Cashmere or Beige with Sand also complement brown well and prevent the overall impression from becoming too dark. In general, natural tones, beige and green, but also orange, go well. For a modern and contemporary look in the bathroom, combine brown tones on the walls with light grey tones and anthracite.

How do brown tiles look in the bathroom?

Brown varnishes and earthy tones generally convey warmth, calm and cosiness. By combining brown varnishes with fresh aqua tones on the tiles, you can create your own personal oasis of well-being. Brown tiles in combination with light sand or cream tones look elegant and sophisticated in the bathroom.

What colour goes with brown floor tiles?

Warm brown tones such as Brown with Dark Chocolate can be complemented by colours with a touch of red. Clear white tones are also suitable. Light sand or cream tones as well as light grey tones and anthracite also work wonderfully with brown floor tiles in the bathroom. To make the brown floor tiles particularly hard-wearing, we recommend applying a topcoat of To Seal after painting.
