Can you really paint tiles with grey paint?
If you want to paint tiles, the first essential step is to clear away all dirt and residue. Limescale, which often clings to bathroom tiles, grease residue in the kitchen, and any dirt and dust must go before you can start painting your tiles with grey paint. We recommend the mild but effective cleaner MissPompadour To Clean. Never use harsh cleaners that contain chlorine or are strongly alkaline. These products can stay behind in the rough grout lines and later ruin your coat of grey paint.
For your grey paint to adhere securely to the smooth surface of the tiles, apply an undercoat after cleaning, using the Bonding & Blocking Primer To Bond & Block. This step is especially important on very smooth tiles and floor tiles. The primer creates a perfect base for the grey paint and guarantees secure adhesion.
Go from light grey to dark grey with this tile paint
Easy Eggshell! by MissPompadour is not only a paint for wood, metal, plastic and stone, but also a hard-wearing tile paint, emission-minimised in line with VdL-RL 01. It is washable and durable, very sturdy overall, and a great fit for your project.
If you're painting floor tiles, add extra protection after painting by coating the whole surface with MissPompadour To Seal. A floor takes a lot of strain from pressure, knocks and scratches, and it should also stand up to frequent cleaning with cleaning products. An extra layer of topcoat protects the paint.
Easy Eggshell! sticks to almost all tiles, but there are a few exceptions. Waxed or otherwise impregnated tiles usually can't be painted, and neither can tiles with a lotus effect. Silicone joints are no problem, though. Simply paint over them with MissPompadour To Seal Silicone. Then you can paint them black without any trouble.
Simple yet versatile: painting tiles grey
Grey is, in every nuance, a subtle and understated shade that doesn't push itself into the foreground and gets along with many other colours. You can use this to your advantage when you're planning to paint tiles. Grey paint comes in many variations and levels of lightness. From pale light grey to rich anthracite, MissPompadour's range of greys covers every shade from light to dark.
And of course, not every grey shade is mixed the same way. Some greys look friendly thanks to light, but also dark, umber or green tones. Others have a little brown pigment added, so tiles painted with them look warm and cosy. Greys can also take on a maritime feel with a touch of blue. Grey tile paint with a little red pigment gives any room with grey tiles a really sophisticated finish.
It's worth choosing carefully when it comes to the grey of your tile paint, too. Depending on which pigments have been mixed into the grey tile paint, a grey can have a very different character. That's why grey tiles aren't as neutral as you might first think. Especially in combination with other shades, it's important to look at which pigments have been added to a grey. The human eye makes a connection between the colours in a room more or less unconsciously, and if that doesn't feel right, grey tiles may not harmonise with their surroundings.
Give your bathroom tiles a grey makeover
A very soft grey like Grey with Seasalt or a rich graphite like Black with Slate can completely transform a bathroom in no time. Grey tiles combined with fresh white and a few accents in natural wood create a feel-good space you can enjoy every day. Bathrooms often have no window to let in daylight. Here, it's important to work with light colours such as the warm Grey with Linen. Or you could combine tile paint in dark grey on the lower part of the wall with a fresh, light yellow on the upper wall tiles and the ceiling. All MissPompadour shades of grey are also available as grey wall paints.
Years or even decades ago, it was fashionable to set colourful or patterned tiles among neutral ones. Don't let that put you off your project. Simply paint those tiles away with 2 coats. If you paint over tiles with grey tile paint, the grout lines get painted too. This creates a calm look, which is usually exactly what you want.
Easy Eggshell! is particularly well suited to wall tiles in the bathroom. If you're painting the wall tiles in the shower, finish the paint job with a layer of topcoat. For floor tiles where standing water often collects, such as in the shower tray or generally in the bathroom, our Easy Eggshell! is not recommended.
Grey kitchen splashback: so many ways to combine it
If you want to give your kitchen a new look, why not start with the splashback? In the kitchen especially, it's important to clear the tiles of any grease film. Use MissPompadour To Clean, followed by the primer To Bond & Block. Then nothing stands in the way of painting your grey tiles. Grey tiles also combine nicely with colourful kitchen cabinets in yellow, blue or green. Easy Eggshell! is suitable for that too. If you'd like to create an industrial vibe, reach for the shade Grey with Concrete.
Match your floor tiles to your interior
Tiles are often found in living areas too, such as the hallway. If your hallway is looking dated and no longer quite fits the style of the rest of your home, why not work a little magic and paint the tiles dark grey? The various shades of dark grey are forgiving, and street dirt doesn't show up on them as quickly. Perhaps you could match the shade to the paint on your stairs. MissPompadour Grey with Peat, with its brown pigments, goes very well with different woods.
Not only a wooden staircase, but also a stone cellar staircase, can be painted beautifully with the same product, our Easy Eggshell! Another great idea is to design grey tiles in 2 or 3 shades of grey. You can use the MissPompadour stencils for this. These stencils come in many interesting designs in a wide variety of styles. And of course, you can use them for more than creative floors. Tiles on the wall can be stencilled too.

At MissPompadour you'll find tile paint in many shades of grey. Let's start with the lighter greys: Grey with Warmth is a friendly, light grey. A touch of umber gives it its positive look. A slightly greenish grey is the light Grey with Morning Dew, a lovely shade alongside any reddish colours. Grey with Blue is of medium intensity, a shade between blue and grey that's not too dark. Grey with Brown is stronger. Grey with Grey is completely neutral, while Grey with Green is a typically Scandinavian shade. Very dark is the beautiful anthracite Grey with Black.

This depends on how the paint is stressed. If the paint comes off in one place after a while, you can always touch it up with varnish colour.

Yes, our Easy Eggshell! is waterproof, with one exception. The varnish does not tolerate standing water. That's why you can paint the tiled walls in the shower wonderfully, but not the shower tray.
What colours complement grey tiles?
This depends on the pigments contained in the grey shade. If colour pigments are added to your grey shade, these colour shades are particularly recommended. For example, shades of green go particularly well with a grey with green pigments.
