Can you really paint tiles white?

Before you take on a project like painting your tiles, you probably have plenty of questions. Will tile paint actually stick to smooth surfaces and in wet rooms? What do I do about the grout and silicone joints? Does white tile paint reliably cover dark shades too? And plenty more. We're here to help you find the right answers.

Proper preparation is key. If you want to use tile paint, cleaning your tiles thoroughly is essential. Be sure to use a mild cleaner such as MissPompadour To Clean. Harsh cleaning products that are strongly alkaline or contain chlorine can ruin a coat of paint applied afterwards.

Before painting, you should also apply a primer so the paint can adhere well to the smooth surface. With To Bond & Block you also create an even base. Silicone joints aren't a problem: simply paint over them with MissPompadour To Seal Silicone. After that, you can paint them white with no trouble at all.

Which paints can you use on tiles?

At MissPompadour you'll find a paint that works perfectly as tile paint. It is also emission-minimised as per VdL-RL 01. The paint quality that's especially well suited to painting tiles is our Easy Eggshell!

These paints give you an extremely hard-wearing surface that's also very easy to care for. It's washable, tough and creates a softly shimmering, satin-matt look. Easy Eggshell! sticks to almost all tiles, though there are a few exceptions: waxed or otherwise impregnated tiles usually can't be painted, and neither can tiles with a lotus effect.

A neutral classic: white tile paint for every room

Of course, you can paint tiles in any indoor room with white paint. Perhaps your kitchen has a tiled splashback in the wet and cooking area. These wall tiles often used to feature patterns that don't excite us at all these days. Applying white tile paint can work wonders here and create a subtle, plain surface.

Thanks to the wide range of white shades, the result is always individual: subtle colour pigments are often added to white paints to create different shades of white. Some whites are brought to life by a hint of red, like White with Powder. Others, like White with Linden Green, contain a touch of green.

These pigments are barely visible on their own, but they influence the colours you pair them with. A white with a slight yellow tint, like White with Ginger, goes especially well with other yellow shades. A white tinted with just a few grey pigments, like White with Character, harmonises with all shades of grey. So if you're planning to paint a surface in two colours with tile paint, or to match your wall paint perfectly, make sure the pigments in your white suit the colour you're pairing it with. That way you'll get a harmonious result.

White tile paint in the bathroom

In the bathroom and toilet, the makeover starts with a thorough clean. MissPompadour To Clean reliably removes all dirt, limescale and grease residue from every tile. If needed, paint over your silicone joints with To Seal Silicone and prime with To Bond & Block.

When painting your bathroom and toilet tiles with white paint, start by painting the grout lines with a brush. Then you can apply the paint across the primed tiles with a roller. If you're painting the wall tiles in the shower too, finish off with a coat of MissPompadour To Seal. This topcoat gives heavily used tiles extra protection. Our Easy Eggshell! isn't suitable for shower floor tiles, as it can't cope with standing water.

Painting tiles white in the hallway

The hallway at the entrance to a house is often tiled. In older houses, the colour of the tiles is often no longer seen as up to date. The only fix is to change the colour of the tiles. If you'd rather avoid the mess and expense of a renovation that involves ripping out the tiles, simply paint your floor tiles in the shade of your choice. Here too, a shade of white or light grey can give a great result.

As a first step, clean the tiles thoroughly and apply a primer. You could then start by painting the floor with white tile paint and decorate the slightly delicate white finish with a great pattern in a vibrant colour. At MissPompadour you'll find a large selection of stencils for this. After all, the shades of all the paints in the collection go with white. Finish off any paints on the floor with MissPompadour To Seal to stabilise them, so these surfaces that are "walked on" every day get an extra protective layer.

White tile paint: a neutral partner for colourful kitchen cabinets

Not every kitchen is white. Some people love colour on kitchen furniture or walls, be it green, blue, red, orange or yellow. To let colourful furniture or walls take centre stage, it's best to keep the other colours in the room understated. That's why you should neutralise a coloured tiled splashback in the kitchen with white paint.

In the kitchen especially, where cooking always leaves a light film of grease in the air, cleaning with MissPompadour To Clean is important. Please avoid harsh, chlorine-based and strongly alkaline cleaning products. They could settle in the grout lines between the tiles and later ruin your paint job. After priming, apply the white paint in two coats.

Painting floor tiles with white tile paint in the utility room

A utility room can also do with a refresh now and then. The floor tiles are primed with To Bond & Block, just like the wall tiles. Then you can apply white paints. For tiles on the floor, please don't forget to finish off with MissPompadour To Seal!

Normally, our Easy Eggshell! is suitable not only for indoors but outdoors too. However, although it copes well with water, it won't withstand standing water in the long run, so the paint should only be used on floor tiles indoors.

Can dark tiles be painted white?

Yes, this is possible without any problems. 2 coats should be enough to make a surface white. The only exception is the colour shade White with White. As this colour does not contain any additional colour pigments, it does not cover as well. All other shades of white are unproblematic.

Can white tile paint be painted over?

Yes, white paint can easily be painted over with all other colour shades.

Does a room look bigger with white tiles?

Light colour shades can make rooms appear larger.

Why is matt white tile paint not suitable?

Matt surfaces are always more sensitive than semi-gloss or smooth surfaces. We therefore do not recommend them as a tile finish.

Are the joints visually lost when painting white?

In fact, this is usually desirable because it creates a much calmer look. However, if you want to contrast the colour of your joints and have a steady hand, you can accentuate them again after painting with a fine brush and a contrasting colour.

What are the advantages of white tile colour?

White tile colour makes every room look fresh and clean. White wall tiles can also be combined with many other colours.

How long does white tile paint last?

This depends on the wear and tear on the surfaces painted with tile varnish. Varnish on floor tiles wears off more quickly than on wall tiles. However, you can also simply touch up smaller areas!
