Applying Topcoat for Chalk Paint, Wood, and Tile Lacquer
Topcoat creates a protective layer. This means the topcoat is applied as the final coat. Allow your paint to dry for 24 hours. Then, apply the topcoat thinly and evenly to the surface using a roller or brush. After sealing, the paint layers and topcoat must be left to cure thoroughly for 14 days. Until then, you should avoid subjecting the surfaces to too much wear and tear. Wait at least 5 days after painting before cleaning the surface for the first time or laying down carpets. The painted surface will then become more resilient with each passing day.
If you painted the surfaces some time ago (at least 14 days previously), the topcoat will have cured after 3 days.
Water-based paints and topcoats are suitable for a wide range of surfaces, with one exception: areas with standing water cannot be painted. The paint is suitable for surfaces that may get wet, but not for horizontal surfaces in wet areas. To Seal is therefore ideal for reinforcing, for example, painted wall tiles in the shower, but not for floor tiles in the shower.
Applying Topcoat to Unpainted Wood
If you are using To Seal to protect untreated wooden surfaces, first ensure the wood is dust-free and clean. Then, apply the first coat of the topcoat thinly and evenly using a roller or brush. The first coat can be thinned with 10–15 per cent water. The second coat should be applied undiluted and not too thinly. As there are no further coats of paint, the topcoat is fully load-bearing after just 3 days.
MissPompadour Topcoat for Protection Against Scratches on All Surfaces
Some surfaces are exposed to particular stresses. These include wooden and tiled floors, stairs and, of course, kitchen furniture. But even if you’ve painted furniture in the children’s room with LittlePomp Chalk Lacquer, it may still have to withstand quite a lot. This isn’t just about mechanical wear and tear such as scratches and dents, but also chemical damage caused by frequent cleaning with detergents. It’s a good thing To Seal exists! Unlike a conventional clear lacquer, To Seal has a silk-matt finish and does not yellow, even when exposed to light. To Seal not only offers effective wood protection against mechanical and chemical influences, but also preserves the beauty of your paint finish.
Sealing Tile Lacquer After Painting
If you’re planning to paint tiles on the wall or floor, there’s no need to use a foul-smelling, harmful tile lacquer. Our gentle yet powerful Easy Eggshell! is the better choice. Simply choose your desired shade from our huge range of colour samples.
After painting your tiles, wait 24 hours and then finish the paint job with To Seal. Whilst wall tiles – whether in the bathroom or kitchen – are generally not exposed to much mechanical stress, they do often get damp and are cleaned with cleaning products. Here, ‘To Seal’ provides reliable protection against abrasion and damage. It goes without saying that floor tiles have to withstand particularly harsh conditions. In this case, it is important to protect the paint finish against scratches, dents and damage of all kinds. A topcoat is therefore absolutely essential for floor tiles. Please note that horizontal surfaces in the shower should not be painted, as water-based paints cannot tolerate standing water.
Sealing Wood Lacquer on Wooden Staircases & Kitchen Fronts
It is also essential to protect any wooden staircase that you have painted. In this case, ‘To Seal’ should definitely be applied to the treads, but the risers and banisters will also benefit from a topcoat. You should also seal any wooden elements that you leave unpainted. A wooden staircase is subjected to heavy mechanical wear from foot traffic and is also exposed to chemical influences from damp mopping. The same applies to untreated and painted floorboards.
Do you want to spruce up the furniture and worktops in your kitchen with a fresh coat of paint? If so, it’s particularly important to ensure the surfaces are absolutely hard-wearing. Kitchen fronts and worktops need to be cleaned frequently due to the steam generated in the kitchen. Unfortunately, harsh grease removers are often used for cleaning, even though MissPompadour To Clean offers a mild yet effective alternative. In the kitchen, there are many good reasons to apply To Seal to further stabilise the surfaces and make them easy to maintain.
Sealing Chalk Paint with Clear Lacquer
We’re frequently asked whether it makes sense to use a clear lacquer as a topcoat for furniture painted with chalk paint. We recommend applying a thin layer of topcoat lacquer, particularly when finishing with chalk lacquer. With To Seal, you’ll achieve a smooth and easy-to-maintain surface.
